In 2014 alone, it was reported that more than 317 million new pieces of malware, computer viruses or other malicious software, were created. That is almost one million new threats every day. With major hacks on Target, Sony and even into Jeep SUVs, it seems almost impossible to keep the hackers out. If online companies do not properly store customers’ sensitive data, hackers have the opportunity to take personal information and sell it on the black market. In an effort to fight back, companies are using tokenization to better conceal sensitive data. Tokenization makes cracking the code useless to hackers.
PCI Compliance
Online businesses utilizing credit card payments must have a secure payment application and cannot store prohibited data, such as the credit card number, CVV2 or the PIN. The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a security standard for organizations that handle major credit cards. In order for a company to become PA-DSS certified, they must follow processes to keep users’ data secure. Read more about PCI Compliance here.
Why Tokenization is a Must
Token technology takes a credit card number and replaces the 16 digit card number with a custom token. It’s non-descriptive and not mathematically reversible, so hackers can never see the stored information. When a customer submits a payment, the sensitive data is encrypted and then sent to a gateway so a token can be generated. Once the payment has been applied, all that is stored on a business’s database is the token and a separate masked credit card number that only contains the last four digits. Since the unique placeholders are unrelated, the stored payment information is meaningless and hackers cannot collect the information. Learn more about tokenization here.
